The Waves is a Rotterdam-based production company producing both documentary as well as scripted films that address urgent global issues. We like partnering with those who can tell stories authentically, while adopting climate-conscious production practices, and while pushing the industry forward through innovative storytelling. Our collaborations are with both new and experienced forward thinking filmmakers making cinematic, journalistic, and impactful work that combines strong author driven vision with high-quality visual craftsmanship.

The Waves was founded by award-winning filmmakers and producers Claudio Montesano Casillas and Loretta van der Horst, who after years of producing international films independently, joint forces in 2024 to produce ambitious films that reach both local as well as global audiences on both small and big screens.

The Waves' credits include BLM 5 years later: Echoes of the DAM by Festus Toll (2025, Omroep Zwart / BNNVARA) and Thay by Sabine van Wechem (2025, VPRO Makers van Morgen).

THE DOCUMENTERS is an urgent and relevant film in development. It puts its finger on a sore spot and raises pressing questions about how we relate to each other. What does it take to stand up to war criminals? What determines who gets away with it? What geopolitical interests play a role in this and what does this say about the current state of universal human rights? These are not easy questions to answer. Director Loretta van der Horst tries to answer these questions and at the same time develop an interesting visual form to develop a compelling film plan and then an impactful film experience.
